Dennis Byrne’s byline has been appearing in newspapers for almost 40 years. Today, he is an op-ed columnist for the Chicago Tribune and a contributing columnist for the popular web site, RealClearPolitics. Byrne’s by-line also appears regularly elsewhere, including the Human Events, and Political Mavens web sites and in Heartland Institute publications.
Before taking up freelancing in 1998, Byrne had been a columnist and editorial board member for the Chicago Sun-Times. In those roles, he turned out up to four op-ed columns a week, helped set the newspaper’s editorial policies and wrote award-winning editorials. Also at the Sun-Times, Byrne served as the paper’s transportation writer and as creator of the newspaper’s first science and technology beat.
Byrne went to the Sun-Times after the closing of the Chicago Daily News, one of the nation’s premier afternoon papers, which he joined as a general assignment reporter in 1965. While there, he also was an assistant financial editor and urban affairs beat reporter.
